How do i access my server drive at my office?
Any suggestions? Its not for me its for my dad. He owns a company and just bought new laptops for himself and the executives below him but they are having trouble accessing the server drive at their office. Any suggestions in fixing the problem. Please be nice :]
There are a number of ways to access information on a server.
How can he do it tonight? Well unless the server was configured to allow for it, it will not happen. How can he set it up?
You can try a vpn made directly to that device(well to the IP add this device is on) long as it is connected to the internet and you have the IP address and credentials the vpn will work. An example of software that does this without the need of an IT specialist is hamachi. This is not my recommendation since you are talking about wanting a very secure option (at least I hope you want a secure option when it comes to business server). It is free software and a way to set up your own networks.
Other options include enabling remote access to this server, than logging into it with those credentials. Setting up an intranet, than accessing it, setting up the information as part of a database for web server (apache is free, IIS you have to pay for). You can also set up lines to be dialed into.
In short, there are a number of ways to do it, one thing I can tell you about networking is one size does NOT fit all. If they have IT staff, ask them to set it up so it is secure. It would be difficult to tell you how you should do it without knowing your set up. Please don't try cookie cutter answers for business (meaning "hey set up a vpn go for it") without first researching possible security problems and always check with your IT specialist first, if they do not have one I'm looking for a job!, no no all jokes aside if they do not, get an IT consultant it should not cost much for a simple thing like this.
