Ubuntu distro allows for what is called Multiverse, that means that junk that Corporations say or claim belongs to them, like Drivers and Plugins can be used. This Distro is stable, easy to install and simple for a Windows User to migrate to without haveing to lose the windows os also.
The DRM and all that junk with it takes the freedom and fun away from the User. Most any Linux Distro, (except )Novell/Suse the good Linux distros allow for workarounds to the barriers that are placed on the End User.
With a Grub/Lilo Boot Manager you can switch between OSs and use what you need when you need to.
So yes there is hope and freedom in some Linux Distros.
